I had so much fun photographing this sweet little girl playing in the leaves. Mom wanted a nice photo for a holiday card. Simple. easy. peasy ~ not! I think I got my exercise for the week that day running around. I’d love to have some of that toddler energy, any way to bottle it up? But after all that running and jumping and crawling and falling, we did end up with some really nice portraits showing all her different expressions. And here are my favorites from our session in the crunchy leaves ~

Telling stories with pictures ~ that is what I like most about being a photographer ~ people, places and the unexpected moments I encounter. I had the honor of photographing a World War II veteran, Fred Butler, 92, of Greenville, SC. The editors of Lehigh University’s Alumni Bulletin magazine (an elegantly designed publication with great writing, photography and design) assigned me to photograph Fred Butler and any memorabilia he may have that would help tell the story. They were commemorating the 70th anniversary of America’s entry into WWII with stories by their alumni. Butler, a 1941 grad of Lehigh University, served in the Navy and recounts the firebombing of his ship, the USS Hazleton in the Pacific. He was featured in this story along with several of his fellow Lehigh alumni. I photographed Fred with his scrapbooks, clippings and also focused on his face & eyes which had seen so much. He also showed me a black and white photo of his high school basketball team, from Honesdale, Pa., which had been perfectly preserved. I brought my 12 year old son along to be my “assistant,” but also so that he could meet Fred and learn about his history and service to our country. It was a precious afternoon ~ capturing moments with Fred and also with my son on our afternoon journey to Greenville. To see the article, please click this link. (Fred is featured on page 36) ~ And here are some of my favorite portraits from our afternoon together:

We had a lot of fun together, and used different settings for our portraits at this picturesque Charlotte, NC park. The children are adorable ~ and so are mom & dad. I was so honored to work with this sweet family and hope they will cherish these family portraits for years to come.

I had the pleasure of meeting an photographing Charlie Sifford, a golf legend, at his home in Charlotte, NC. The Southern California Golf Association inducted him into their Hall of Fame this fall, and published a story about his legacy in the pages of its magazine, FORE. You can see a virtual copy of the magazine here. Turn to page 14/15 to view the story & portraits. Sifford, now 89, fought discrimination in golf and ended up winning two PGA tournaments. He broke the color barrier and paved the way for all athletes to compete fairly. At his home, I photographed him with his golf club, his golf memorabilia and also focused on capturing a simple portrait of his face. It was an honor to work with him and here are some of my favorite images from my assignment with Charlie Sifford.

I recently trekked up to the Baltimore-Washington area, to see my family and photograph photo sessions. This family is a friend and a client, and we’ve known each other since our children were babies. It’s so much fun to see these children grow up so nicely ~ each time I visit they are taller and more gorgeous! (is that possible?!) and I get to visit with their mom and catch up ~ a total win-win! This time we decided to photograph their session at Savage Mill, a lovely historic mill-turned-complex featuring antiques, shops, pubs, restaurants, a French bakery and artists lofts. The setting is beautiful with the historic Bollman Iron Truss Bridge spanning the Little Patuxent River next to the Mill. And here are some of my favorite portraits from our session ~

Remember the show Eight is Enough? Well, I met a real life family of eight while on assignment for U City Magazine last month. Meet David and Mendy Henderson and their six children – their most recent additions are twins, adopted from Ethiopia last year. The Hendersons, who started University City Fellowship church in 2000, are featured in the November issue of UCity. My favorite quote from the story is “love loud, risk often, hope always,” David’s mantra. He and Mendy truly practice what they preach and follow their hearts. Their church’s mission is to reach people local and globally, and they have done just that. Here are my favorite images from my afternoon with the Hendersons. To see more, please visit the UCity Magazine pages.

If you know me, you know I love food, cooking, dining out and collecting cook books! I also love to tell stories of people who give back, pay it forward or contribute to their community. So I was thrilled to work with South Park Magazine this month to photograph two top Charlotte chefs Gene Briggs and Paul Ketterhagen, and their special dishes for a feature on the upcoming March of Dimes Signature Chefs’ Auction November 3 at Carmel Country Club. Briggs, executive chef and partner of Blue Restaurant and Bar prepared a Rabbit Stifado and Ketterhagen, executive chef at Carpe Diem prepared a Tomato Cobbler. Both chefs will be participating in this special dinner to benefit the March of Dimes ~ Proceeds benefit the March of Dimes mission to promote healthy babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. You can read about the chefs, their dishes and their commitment to charities in the November issue of South Park Magazine and you can see the fun photographs I took here ~
